Dr Kelso is missing from the next run of Scrubs, and Zach Braff says asking him back is a big ask.

ABC's announced cast for Season 2 of the revival, meaning new episodes years after the original ended, does not include Ken Jenkins. The actor was on creator Bill Lawrence's wish list for the return, according to Deadline.

Lawrence told Deadline in February 2026, ahead of the Season 1 premiere, that Kelso would be back next year because it just did not work out this year. That return has not yet happened.

Braff addressed it in a joint video interview with co-stars Sarah Chalke and Donald Faison. He said Jenkins is 86 and retired, so any request has to be respectful of his age. He added that he will keep trying.

Jenkins played Dr Bob Kelso, the former Sacred Heart Chief of Medicine. He appeared across the show's entire nine-season original run.

Plenty of other familiar faces are confirmed for Season 2. Returning guest stars include John C. McGinley as Dr Perry Cox and Judy Reyes as Carla.

They are joined by Neil Flynn as The Janitor, Christa Miller as Jordan, Robert Maschio as The Todd and Scott Foley as Sean. McGinley joined the follow-up as a recurring player, meaning he appears in several episodes rather than every one.

Cox sits at the centre of the early story. His former pupils rally to find treatment for his autoimmune disease in the opening episodes.

Braff said the writers find that rescue mission interesting and want to continue it to keep McGinley around. Keeping him around takes some organising. McGinley is a series regular, meaning a main cast member, on Lawrence's HBO series Rooster, whose second season started production in Los Angeles a couple of weeks after Scrubs began filming its second season in Vancouver.

Foley has a personal storyline. He returns as Sean, a romantic interest for his former flame Elliot, played by Chalke.

Turk faces a heavier arc. Braff said Turk is battling struggles with his mental health introduced in the pilot. Season 2 will explore how J.D. coming back was only a temporary cure.

Faison said Turk will get a more dramatic arc that picks up his mental-health monologue from the pilot to find out how far the rabbit hole goes.

The core trio stays in place with no change, including Braff as John "J.D." Dorian and Faison as Christopher "Turk" Turk. The revival launched 25 Feb on ABC.

For fans, this means a familiar hospital with its old boss still absent, but its mentor and best friends firmly in the frame.
