Million Goods opens Fort Greene flagship with wine bar and red stair

A glossy red spiral staircase seen through the windows says it first. This is not a normal shop.
Concept store Million Goods, a shop that mixes retail with food, drink and events, has opened its second Brooklyn location in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, at 201 DeKalb Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11205. The business was co-founded by Matt Reyer and Drew Kaufmann, and the new site is described as its flagship store, meaning its main and largest shop Time Out.
The design is by architect Gjergji Shkurti, founder of the practice Figure Ground, working with the Million Goods team Dezeen. The original Million Goods in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, occupies a single level. The Fort Greene building flips that idea. It has two levels and an expansive courtyard.
Social spaces sit downstairs. Retail sits upstairs. The ground floor holds a wine bar with a Breccia Pernice stone counter, a patterned Italian stone, alongside marble and customised wood joinery.
Music is built into the room. Bridge Street Sound designed the sound system, with a large speaker set into the face of the marble bar. Upstairs, the retail floor uses marble, customised joinery and selected furniture pieces.
The furniture comes from Danish design company Frama and American maker Emeco. Lighting comes from Danish company Louis Poulsen Time Out. Outside, the backyard was designed to evoke Brazilian brutalism, a concrete-led style known for bold, raw forms.
The shop is open Tuesday from 12pm to 10pm, Wednesday from 12pm to 11pm, Thursday to Saturday from 12pm to 12am, and Sunday from 12pm to 10pm. Million Goods has announced a grand opening party for the Fort Greene store featuring Lee101 Million Goods.
What makes this stand out is the order of things. Drink first, shop later. The red stair links the two.
