Werwulf trailer reunites Eggers with Nosferatu stars for Christmas Day release
Focus Features has released a new trailer for Werwulf, the 13th-century England story from director Robert Eggers, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film is due in cinemas on Christmas Day, 25 December 2026.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as a man who transforms into a monstrous creature. Lily-Rose Depp plays his wife, and Willem Dafoe plays a knight sent to rid the countryside of wolves.
The setting is rural England in the 1200s. No electric light. No modern medicine. Villages sit close to the forest, and close to old stories about what hunts at night.
The new trailer ends on a held moment. Taylor-Johnson shakes. He looks toward the sky. The change appears to be near.
The three leads previously starred together in Eggers's Nosferatu. That vampire film opened on Christmas Day in 2024. It later grossed $180 million worldwide and earned four Oscar nominations in craft categories, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
The Christmas date matters in release strategy. Many people are off work. Cinemas stay full. Studios often use that week for broad audience films that can keep playing into January.
First footage from Werwulf was shown during Universal's presentation at CinemaCon in April, where it was billed as Eggers's most terrifying motion picture yet. Eggers co-wrote the script with Sjon. The new cut follows an earlier trailer released on 29 June 2026. That first trailer introduced the film as a period Gothic horror story dated for US theatres on 25 December 2026, according to Yahoo Entertainment. IGN published the latest cut as Werwulf - Official Trailer 2 on 26 September 2026.
Universal Pictures hosts official trailers and videos on its dedicated Werwulf movie page. International listings point to January dates beyond the United States. Universal Pictures Spain presents the film as LICANTROPO, listed as '8 de enero solo en cines', while Universal Pictures Argentina lists Werwulf as '21 de enero en cines'.
What makes this stand out is the speed of the reunion. Same director. Same three stars. A different monster, in a much older England.
