Ethel Cain Sings in Middle English on Robert Eggers' Werwulf

Ethel Cain has recorded a song for Werwulf, the horror film directed by Robert Eggers, Pitchfork reported. The track, "Wynter Waxeth", is a collaboration with composer Robin Carolan, and Cain sings it in Middle English, the form of the language spoken in England roughly between the 1150s and 1500s.
The film is due in cinemas on Christmas Day, 25 December 2026. Focus Features, which presents the picture, says it will be released only in theatres. It stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe and Lily-Rose Depp. Eggers co-wrote the script with Sjón, and the producers listed by Focus Features are Eggers, Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Garrett Bird and Sjón.
Carolan wrote the bulk of the film's soundtrack. He has worked with Eggers before, scoring two of the director's earlier films, The Northman and Nosferatu.
The soundtrack has two release dates. A digital release, meaning it can be bought and streamed online, is set for 18 December. The vinyl record follows on 29 January, issued through Sacred Bones, an independent record label. Vinyl is the pressed record format, and the January date is about six weeks after the digital release.
Cain has also been busy on her own catalogue. She released the album Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You in 2025. The same year brought Perverts, which followed Preacher's Daughter.
For listeners, the practical point is simple. The soundtrack's digital release comes before the film's opening day, so the song can be heard in advance. Anyone who prefers a physical copy will have to wait until the end of January.
