Leigh Leopards have signed Hull KR prop Tevita Pangai Junior on a multi-year deal from the start of the 2027 season.

The 30-year-old will see out the rest of 2026 with Hull KR before switching to their Super League rivals next year, BBC Sport reported on 26 September 2026.

Pangai Junior only joined Hull KR in May on a contract until the end of this season. That short stay will end with a longer-term move to Leigh.

In rugby league, the prop is the engine-room job. These are the big front-row forwards who take the first carries into contact, wrestle for quick play-the-balls and anchor the middle of the defensive line. It is heavy, repetitive work. Teams rotate their props to keep momentum when legs tire.

Super League is the top professional division in Britain and France. The NRL is its Australian counterpart, widely regarded as the hardest week-to-week club competition in the sport. Pangai Junior knows both.

He arrived in England after spells with several NRL clubs and then a stint with Catalans Dragons, the French side based in Perpignan. That route is familiar. Many Pacific and Australian forwards test themselves in Super League after making their name at home.

His time at Hull KR has been stop-start. Two lengthy suspensions have limited his appearances since his May arrival. In league, a suspension means no replacement. The team simply goes without the player while he serves his ban, which can stall any new signing's rhythm.

Leigh have chosen to look past that disruption. A multi-year contract gives a forward security and gives a club time to bed him into its systems, its defensive shapes and its rotation off the bench. Props rarely change games with one moment. They change them by winning the early collisions, again and again.

For newcomers, the context is simple. Clubs work with tight salary limits and small senior squads, so locking in a proven middle forward early helps plan rotations for a long, bruising season.

For supporters, the timing needs a little patience. Pangai Junior remains a Hull KR player for the rest of this campaign. Leigh fans will not see him in their colours until 2027.

What makes this stand out is the calculation. Leigh are buying experience for next season while their rival still needs the player now. It is a common Super League dance. One club's short-term fix becomes another's long-term plan.
