NFL Overrun Delays VMAs TV Start as Theatre Show Begins on Time

TV audiences missed the live opening of the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, Sept. 27, when a dramatic NFL finish in Brazil pushed the broadcast back by more than 20 minutes.
The two-hour programme was scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. PT, which reflects the three-hour gap between the East and West coasts of the United States. It was due to come from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles as a simulcast, meaning it aired live at the same moment on CBS and MTV and streamed on Paramount+, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Advance listings had flagged the Sunday, Sept. 27 date and the two-hour window, as noted by Bozeman Daily Chronicle.
Football ran long. The problem was an overrun, the trade term for live sport holding its TV slot past the planned handover time. In this case the overrun came from the NFL game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Dallas Cowboys in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which ran into the VMAs slot on CBS and MTV.
It was a close one. The game stood at 31-31 with seven seconds left before the Ravens closed it out 34-31. That September meeting in Rio was the NFL's first game in the city, Reuters reported when the fixture was announced in April.
The room did not wait. Inside the Peacock Theater, organisers started the live show on time at 4:30 p.m. PT with a performance by Madonna and Charli XCX. Madonna had been set to open the night, billed as her first VMAs performance in more than 20 years.
Viewers at home saw a holding pattern. During the delay, MTV carried a pretaped retrospective of past Video Vanguard recipients hosted by Donnie Wahlberg. A scrolling message told viewers the VMAs would "begin shortly."
The main feed finally arrived shortly after 4:50 p.m. PT. That put the CBS, MTV and Paramount+ start more than 20 minutes behind the advertised time. A simulcast of this kind requires all three outlets to join together, so one hold delays every screen. Host Snoop Dogg opened the televised portion with a brief monologue, followed quickly by Teyana Taylor presenting Best Pop, which went to Blackpink's Lisa.
For fans, this means there were effectively two starts. The audience in Los Angeles saw the opening number live at the advertised hour. The audience watching on channels and streaming joined after football, with the early stage moments held back for broadcast.
