2026 VMAs draw 8.43 million viewers, biggest audience since 2015

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards drew 8.43 million viewers across CBS and MTV, including an encore screening on MTV. It was the most-watched VMAs since 2015, and up 51% on last year, Billboard reported.
The total breaks down into two audiences. CBS averaged 7.61 million viewers, up 52% from 5.00 million in 2025. MTV's simulcast — shown live on both channels at the same time — averaged 686,000 viewers, up 40% from 491,000 last year. The 2025 show, which aired on 7 September 2025 on CBS and MTV with an encore on MTV, drew 5.60 million viewers.
The peak came early. More than 15 million viewers were watching across CBS and MTV during the opening act. The show was hosted by Snoop Dogg and broadcast live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
It was scheduled to run from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. ET. The CBS feed started about 20 to 22 minutes late because an NFL game ran long.
Online activity was heavy too. The telecast ranked as the day's most social show, with 31.1 million interactions — likes, comments, shares and posts — and 159 million video views.
On stage, the night was shared by two headliners. Madonna won a field-leading seven awards, while she and Taylor Swift split the top prizes, according to Gold Derby. Bruno Mars performed "Dance With Me" during the ceremony. The show aired live on 27 September on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.
What makes this stand out is the size of the year-on-year lift. Award shows have fought for live viewers as audiences split across streaming. This time the VMAs added almost three million viewers in twelve months.
