Saracens Edge Leicester 40-38 in Premiership Opening Thriller

Saracens held on for a 40-38 win away to Leicester in the opening round of the 2026/27 Gallagher Prem season.
The game was played on the opening weekend of the new campaign on 25-27 September, with Leicester against Saracens listed as a Round 1 fixture Prem Rugby. It finished as a shootout. The lead changed hands four times in the final half hour alone, according to BBC Sport.
It was chaos. Brilliant chaos.
Saracens did it the hard way. Centre Olly Hartley went off with a first-half injury, and lock Nick Isiekwe was shown a 20-minute red card in the second half. That law means the player is sent off for good, but the team can bring on a replacement after 20 minutes.
The win set the tone for the return of Brendan Venter as Saracens’ director of rugby. Before the season, at the club’s St Albans training base, he told the squad he did not want to be competitive. He wanted to dominate the league, BBC Sport reported.
Venter backed those words with a bold selection. England forward Ben Earl, normally a back-rower who carries and tackles around the breakdown, started in the centres in a rejigged backline. Centres are the midfield runners and tacklers outside the fly-half, where defensive reads are ruthless.
The context explains the hunger. Since coming back up from the Championship, Saracens have banked more regular-season Prem points across the past five campaigns than any other club. Yet they have missed the play-offs, the top-four knockout that decides the title, in each of the past two seasons.
Leicester refused to let them settle. The Tigers kept punching back every time Saracens pulled clear, and with a man advantage after Isiekwe’s dismissal they sensed a late steal. Saracens just had enough points in the bank.
What makes this stand out is who got them home. With Hartley lost and the pack reshuffled, Saracens turned to youth. Olamide Sodeke, a 21-year-old second row, came on to help steady the set-piece. Second rows are the tall forwards who drive the scrum and jump in the lineout, the throw-in that restarts play after the ball goes out. Alongside that promise is 22-year-old Nathan Michelow, a member of England’s 2024 Under-20 World Cup-winning side.
Elsewhere in Round 1, Bath won away to Harlequins on Friday night. Harlequins against Bath was another of the weekend’s opening fixtures.
Bath full-back Santi Carreras produced the early contender for try of the season. On 32 minutes, Harlequins tried to move the ball wide through Tyrone Green to Oscar Beard. Carreras stuck out a boot to intercept the pass, caught the bouncing ball one-handed and raced in to score under the posts, BBC Sport reported. It was quick thinking turned into seven points.
Gloucester also started with an away win, beating Exeter at Sandy Park. The game had been scheduled for Saturday, 26 September in Exeter ESPN. Gloucester arrived with a refreshed coaching ticket after the summer. Brett Deacon joined as forwards coach from Leicester, while Joel Tomkins arrived as defence coach from rugby league side Catalan Dragons.
For fans, this means an early marker. Saracens want the story of this season to be about control and titles, not near misses. On this evidence, they will do it with noise, nerve and a few new faces.
