Ferg says dropping A$AP from his name was about growth

Ferg says dropping A$AP from his stage name came down to growth, answering A$AP Rocky’s admission that the change bothered him.
He addressed the subject during an appearance on Complex’s In Motion With Ashley Nicole Moss, in comments reported by Billboard on 28 September 2026. Rocky had told Apple Music’s Ebro that Ferg removing A$AP from his name bothered him, while adding that he would not hold it against him and wished him the best.
Ferg said Rocky’s reaction was personal to Rocky. He added that he has to follow his own truth, and that there is nothing wrong with growing.
He stressed the switch was not meant as disrespect, according to Complex. He said he still has A$AP tattooed on him. He explained that he was always Ferg growing up, and became A$AP Ferg when he came to work with the Mob.
The Harlem rapper described A$AP Mob, the loose crew of rappers, producers and creatives he rose with, as more of a label and a collective than a conventional group. He said the name change was about standing as his own man and showing people what Ferg is about, rather than following someone else’s dream.
The comments follow earlier remarks Ferg made in January 2025 to Toure, when he said A$AP felt like a thing of the past. He pointed to the lack of a new Cozy Tape, the crew’s compilation series, alongside no office and no active A$AP Worldwide record label.
For listeners, this means little mystery remains about where the two stand. Rocky has stated his frustration openly. Ferg has stated his reason just as plainly.
