Rob Lowe says the St. Elmo's Fire sequel is definitely in the works, and every member of the original cast wants to do it.

Speaking on Watch What Happens Live, Lowe said the actors are supposed to get a draft of the script in the first week of October, according to Variety on 28 September 2026. That is the firmest timetable yet. Short answer: the pages are next.

The follow-up would pick up the story more than 40 years after the first film. The original St. Elmo's Fire is a 1985 coming-of-age film about a group of friends adjusting to life after university, as described by Deadline in October 2024. The plan calls for a full reunion: Andrew McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, Lowe, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy and Mare Winningham.

The project has taken a long, public road to this point. Deadline first reported in June 2024 that Sony Pictures was exploring a sequel that would bring the ensemble back together. The studio project has been described since as in early development, which in industry terms means writers and producers are working up the story before any shoot is organised or dated.

Lowe has given regular updates along the way. In July 2024 he told Entertainment Tonight the idea was in “very early stages” after he had met with the studio. By October 2024 he and Moore were actively trying to make it happen, and Lowe said at the time that the effort was “moving along”.

The pace picked up again last year. Lowe told People in an exclusive published on 29 June 2025 that work was continuing at Sony. Then Deadline reported on 27 June 2026 that Lowe had revealed a sequel script was in the works, setting up his latest comment about an October draft.

For fans, this means the question has changed. It is no longer whether the seven stars are willing. It is what is on the page when that draft arrives.
