Modern Warfare 4 stops the clock on double XP outside matches

Your double XP tokens will no longer burn away while you wait for a match.
Activision has confirmed that in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, the tokens will count down only when you are actively in a match. The change applies at launch and beyond, according to Eurogamer.
Double XP tokens are consumable boosts that double the experience you earn for a set period. They speed up progress for player levels, weapon unlocks and battle pass rewards. Under the old setup, many ran on real-world time. Minutes lost to matchmaking, loading screens and lobby waiting still ate into them. Under the new setup, the timer only runs during live play.
It is a small fix with a clear payoff. Short sessions count in full. A 15-minute token now means 15 minutes of actual play, not 15 minutes from the moment you press activate.
There is also relief for savers. Any existing double XP tokens built up in earlier Call of Duty titles or in Warzone will work in Modern Warfare 4. Warzone is the free-to-play battle royale offshoot of Call of Duty that shares progress with the main releases. Players who have banked boosts over several years will not have to start again.
Modern Warfare 4 has a release date of 23 October on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and Switch 2. The Switch 2 version puts the series on a Nintendo console at launch alongside the other platforms.
The XP change is not the only news on what carries over. Starting with Season 1 of Modern Warfare 4, Warzone will add a new Operator Skin toggle. Operators are the playable characters you appear as, and other players appear as, in a match. The toggle will work in Warzone only and will give players more control over the Operator looks they see, according to the Call of Duty Blog.
Season 1 is the first major post-launch update block, a live-service game sold and then updated in seasons after launch. Details on exactly how the toggle will look in the menus have not been fully laid out. What is confirmed is the scope. It affects what you see in Warzone, not in the main Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer.
That sits alongside Carry Forward, the system that lets players keep using content they have already earned or bought. Activision says Carry Forward continues to provide access to that material across both Modern Warfare 4 and Warzone, as noted on the Call of Duty Blog.
For players, this means less waste and less re-buying. Tokens last as long as they should. Old boosts stay useful. Favourite looks stay in the locker for the next game and the next season.
