Father John Misty releases one-off single 'The X-panded Universe'

Father John Misty has released a one-off single, 'The X-panded Universe', on 29 September via Sub Pop.
The track is his third single of 2026. It follows 'The Payoff' and 'The Old Law', both released earlier this year, according to Pitchfork.
'The X-panded Universe' is available on all digital streaming services worldwide via Sub Pop. It was written and composed by Josh Tillman, who performs as Father John Misty, arranged by Drew Erickson and co-produced by Erickson and Tillman, according to Sub Pop.
The song is not brand new to listeners who catch his live shows. It debuted in his live set in autumn 2024, the label said.
That live debut came around the same period as his most recent album. He released the LP 'Mahashmashana', a long-playing album, in late 2024. He has since released 'The Payoff' in May 2026 and 'The Old Law', which had circulated since 2024 under the title 'God's Trash'.
He also issued a demos collection to mark the 10th anniversary of his 2015 album 'I Love You, Honeybear'.
Live work is next. Misty will tour the West Coast of the United States in December. It will be his first tour without a full band in over a decade, and his first solo tour since 2013.
Singer-songwriter Damien Jurado will support for the whole December run.
The listed dates start with 6 October in Los Angeles at The Fonda Theatre, which Sub Pop lists as sold out. The December leg runs from 9 to 19 December, with stops in Boulder, Ft. Collins, Santa Fe, Tucson, Napa, Grass Valley and Carmel-by-the-Sea.
The run opens on 9 December at Boulder Theatre in Boulder, Colorado. It closes with two nights, on 18 and 19 December, at Sunset Cultural Center in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, billed as the 4th Annual Big Sur Park School Benefit shows.
For fans, this means a different kind of evening. A solo set strips the songs back to voice and instruments on stage, without the weight of a full band behind them.
