A table lamp carved from volcanic stone and informed by a sunrise leads 13 student designs from Mexico. The selection was published on 29 September 2026 by Dezeen in its School Shows series. School Shows is the publication's platform for work by architecture and design students. The headline for this edition points straight to that stone lamp.

The projects come from Architecture, Art and Design at Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico. They were prepared for Inédito Universitario 2026 at Design Week México. Inédito Universitario is the student showcase of the design week. The group was guided by tutor Luis Miguel Gutiérrez.

All 13 pieces were developed alongside artisans and workshops from different regions of Mexico. Students worked with makers on choice of material and method of production. The result is a small collection in stone, clay, wood, leather and glass.

Two works use volcanic stone. The sunrise-informed table lamp is crafted from the rock, which forms from cooled lava. Its shape responds to sunrise. The lamp uses the heavy stone as both structure and shade.

Tatemada by Gabriela Covarrubias Rodríguez works in a different earth material. It is a table lamp made from black clay from Oaxaca. The form is inspired by Oaxaca's traditional smoke kitchens. Smoke kitchens are enclosed cooking rooms where foods are cured over wood smoke.

Estrato by Mariana Gayón García returns to hard stone. It is a tabletop book organiser made of black volcanic stone. The organiser is sized for a desk or shelf. It holds books in place on a tabletop.

The group also includes tableware and seating. One is a stone plate topped with a glass cloche, the clear dome used to cover and present food. The reference for the set is Mexican cinema. The other is a wooden stool finished with leather tassels, soft strands knotted as trim.

What makes this stand out is the exchange. Students bring fresh briefs. Makers bring regional knowledge.

The full group of 13 is listed on the School Shows page. It brings together the lamps, the organiser, the plate and the stool in one place. Readers can move from sunrise to smoke kitchen without leaving the page.
