Xbox has started rolling out its disc-to-digital feature to all players, after testing with Xbox Insider members since late August. Xbox told players by email the option will appear when they next run a system update, according to Video Games Chronicle.

Xbox Insider members are players who opt in to try early system software. They have had access to disc-to-digital since the end of August.

It works simply. Insert a compatible Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc into one of those consoles, sign in and launch the game. That claims a digital licence, which then acts as if the game was bought on the Xbox Store. Once claimed, the game can be launched without putting the disc back in the drive.

The physical disc keeps working as before. The digital copy adds flexibility. It can be played across multiple Xbox devices, including the Series S, a console sold without a disc drive for digital-only play.

For supported games, the benefits stretch further. Some claimed copies include PC access through Xbox Play Anywhere, which lets one purchase cover Xbox and PC. Others support streaming through Xbox Cloud Gaming, which plays the game over the internet without a download.

The catalogue is large but not complete. Xbox said the launch covers thousands of titles, although not every disc will yet produce a digital licence. The feature applies to Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs. Publisher coverage is still growing.

Ubisoft games were missing when Insider testing began, then added 10 days later. Xbox said another batch of games was added alongside the rollout to all users, but has not confirmed exactly which games.

What makes this stand out is the handling of delisted games. Titles withdrawn from digital sale can still convert, including Deadpool, F1 2021, Minecraft: Story Mode, Rock Band 4 and Titanfall. That keeps playable digital versions within reach even where the store listing is gone.

Xbox detailed the idea on 26 August 2026 in a first-party post titled “Your Discs. Now Also Digital.”, with full steps in its Xbox Support guide. For players, this means a shelf of discs can become a travel-ready library. No rebuy. No extra drive to carry.
