Xbox owners can now leave the disc case on the shelf.

Xbox has launched its disc-to-digital feature for all owners of Xbox consoles, after about a month in testing, Eurogamer reported on 30 September 2026. The tool turns Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs into digital copies tied to a player's account.

Here is how it works. Insert a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X and launch the game to claim the digital entitlement, according to Xbox's announcement "Your Discs. Now Also Digital.", published on 26 August 2026. Once converted, the game no longer needs the disc in the drive to prove ownership when you play. No disc in the drive required.

The coverage is broad but not total. The feature works with most physical games across the Xbox One and Xbox Series X generations, but not all games are eligible. Pure Xbox reported on 29 September 2026 that 1,500 games are now supported.

Selling or passing on a disc still matters. A disc-to-digital licence moves with the physical disc, so if a new owner converts that same disc, the original owner's licence is revoked. The digital copy does not create a second copy to keep alongside the disc.

There is also a PC benefit for some titles. Games that support Xbox Play Anywhere, Microsoft's system where one purchase unlocks play on both console and PC, can be downloaded and played on PC through the Xbox app once converted. The full release also adds a small quality-of-life setting, an option to stop discs from automatically starting the installation process when inserted.

For players with stacks of discs, this means less swapping and faster access. Keep the discs if you want to trade or resell, because the digital version follows the disc, not just the first person who claimed it.
