Danny Boyle says 28 Years Later part 3 will get made, backs O'Connell for Bond

Danny Boyle says the third film in the 28 Years Later series will get made.
The director gave the update while speaking at the Zurich Film Festival, where he was presenting Ink, according to Variety. He was appearing in support of the new film on 30 September.
Boyle said writer Alex Garland has written a very good script for part three, according to Variety. He added that the film will feature a lot of Cillian Murphy. Short line, big news for followers of the horror series.
The comments build on earlier trade reporting around the project. Sony is moving ahead with a third 28 Years movie, Deadline reported in December 2025. That report said Murphy was in talks to star, which means a deal was discussed but not signed at that stage.
Murphy has a long history with the series. He starred in 28 Days Later, the 2002 film that started it all, and he appears in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, according to Deadline. The new run is planned as a linked set of three films, with Garland writing and Boyle involved as director and producer across the relaunch.
Boyle was in Zurich with Ink, which he directed. The film is based on a play by James Graham, according to Collider. Boyle previously worked with Jack O'Connell on 28 Years Later, that same report noted.
O'Connell also came up in a very different conversation. Boyle said O'Connell should be cast as James Bond, according to Variety. He added that Denis Villeneuve, who is set to direct the next Bond film, will look after the franchise very well.
For fans, this means two threads to watch. The 28 Years story looks set to continue with Murphy back at the centre, and O'Connell has a high-profile supporter in the long debate over who plays 007 next.
