Mogwai have recorded a new song with Iggy Pop. Titled “Underground,” it is their first full collaboration as performers.

The track will appear on Mogwai’s upcoming compilation, “Happy Tears,” set for release on Jan. 8, according to Rolling Stone. A compilation album collects older tracks, rarities or highlights in one package, rather than presenting all-new material.

“Happy Tears” is framed as a look back over Mogwai’s 30-year history. It brings together highlights and rarities from across that period.

The link with Pop goes back further. Mogwai previously sampled parts of a 1977 CBC interview by Pop for “Punk Rock,” the opening track of their album “Come On Die Young.” This time he appears as a guest vocalist.

What makes this stand out for listeners is the direct connection. A sample reuses an old voice recording. A duet means both acts were in the studio for a new song.

The “Underground” video was directed by Scott McPherson. Details of the shoot have not been disclosed beyond that credit.

“Happy Tears” also includes a reworking of “New Paths to Helicon 1.” Retitled “Brand New Paths to Helicon 1,” the new version features the Budapest Art Orchestra, an ensemble that records film, pop and classical work with live strings and brass.

For buyers, the band is offering several physical options. “Happy Tears” will be available in double- and quadruple-LP configurations, meaning two- and four-disc vinyl sets, as well as double CD and digitally.
