David Sylvian will release a new album, The Distance Between the Killer and the Killing, on February 27. It will arrive on NANOQ, described as his new label. The record is a single 46-minute instrumental, meaning one continuous piece of music with no vocals and no separate tracks, according to Pitchfork.

That shape sets it apart from a standard album rollout. There is no list of songs to preview in order. There is one work, heard start to finish. At 46 minutes, it fills roughly the length of one LP, the long-playing vinyl format that defined the album era.

The music was assembled from improvisational sessions recorded between 2012 and 2025. Improvisation means the players create in the moment, responding to each other rather than working from fixed songs. The span covers 13 years of material, brought together into a single result.

The sessions bring Sylvian together with four collaborators. They are Otomo Yoshihide, Jamie Drouin, Biliana Voutchkova and Ryuichi Sakamoto. The announcement does not break down who plays where across the 46 minutes. It presents the album as a shared set of performances, shaped into one piece.

NANOQ bills the release as the official follow-up to Manafon, Sylvian's 2009 solo album. That wording matters. It tells listeners and shops how to file the record. It is not presented as a compilation, a live document or an archive project. It is presented as the next full studio step after Manafon.

Sylvian is the former singer of Japan. His solo catalogue since leaving the group has included song-led records, extended experimental works and collaborations with musicians from outside rock. Manafon, released in 2009, was his last solo album of new material under that framing.

He has not been absent from release schedules since then. In 2010 he released Sleepwalkers, a compilation that collected non-album collaborations from the 21st century. That kind of collection gathers guest appearances and one-off tracks in one place, rather than introducing a new album statement.

In 2012 he released A Victim of Stars: 1982-2012. That compilation looked back across three decades, from his early solo years through to 2012. In 2019 he reissued his first four solo albums on vinyl. A reissue returns existing records to the shops, often with restored sound and packaging for collectors.

For listeners, this means the wait ends with something spare. One track. No words. Thirteen years of session tapes resolved into less than an hour of music.

The Distance Between the Killer and the Killing is due on February 27 on NANOQ.
