Arsenal threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Paris FC in the UEFA Women's Champions League on 30 September 2026.

Maeline Mendy's penalty denied them all three points at Stade Jean-Bouin. It was a frustrating night in Paris. Arsenal had looked in control The Guardian.

Alessia Russo gave Arsenal the lead. Georgia Stanway then made it 2-0. Two goals up, away in Europe, the game was theirs to close out.

Paris FC had other ideas. Clara Mateo pulled one back when she rounded goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez and slotted into an empty net. Suddenly the home crowd believed.

The equaliser came from a strange mix-up. Rodriguez took a goal-kick and passed short to centre-back Leah Williamson. Williamson handled the ball, apparently thinking play had not restarted. The referee ruled that it had. Penalty to Paris.

Mendy kept her nerve. She converted from the spot to level at 2-2.

Rodriguez had started in goal ahead of Anneke Borbe. It was a big call. She was beaten twice in the second half, first by Mateo's sharp finish and then by Mendy from twelve yards.

Arsenal arrived in Paris with five points from their opening four games in the title race. They needed a calm European night. They did not get one.

There is history here. Paris FC knocked Arsenal out of Champions League qualifying in 2023 with a win on penalties. That memory hung over this tie.

This was a Matchday 2 fixture in the league phase, the opening round where teams all sit in one large table and play for a place in the knockouts UEFA. Kick-off was 18:45 in Paris. Arsenal already know the road is hard, with title-holders Barcelona and eight-time winners OL Lyonnes among their league-phase opponents Reuters.

What makes this stand out is the manner of it. Arsenal did the hard part. They scored twice away from home. Then one moment of confusion between goalkeeper and defender changed everything.

For fans, this means another night of what might have been in Paris. Two points dropped, not one point won. The group is still wide open.
