Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal's squad on the eve of their match in Denmark.

The 41-year-old announced his departure on 30 September 2026, shortly after head coach Jorge Jesus told reporters he would not start the next game. Ronaldo had arrived with the squad by bus at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen for training. He did not join his teammates on the pitch.

It is a sharp turn in Portugal's international break. Portugal are the defending champions in the Nations League, UEFA's tournament for national teams played between World Cups and European Championships. They opened this campaign with a 2-1 win over Norway in Oslo.

Ronaldo spent that entire match on the bench. Goncalo Ramos, the Milan striker, scored the winner, according to The Guardian.

Jesus said he had spoken to Ronaldo before the Norway game. The message was clear. Ronaldo would not start but could come on late. In the end, Jesus decided not to use him at all.

The coach then confirmed his plan for Denmark. Ramos would start again. Ronaldo would not.

What followed moved quickly. The Portuguese Football Federation issued a statement confirming Ronaldo had not trained. Moments later, Ronaldo posted on Instagram to say he had decided to leave the camp after a conversation with the federation president.

Jesus pushed back on one point. He said Ronaldo had done individual mobility and strengthening work on Tuesday. He had not refused to train.

Ronaldo is Portugal's leading goalscorer and most-capped player, with 146 goals in 234 appearances. He was named in Jesus's first 25-man squad earlier in September after Jesus took charge of the national team, as reported by Reuters.

He said in the summer of 2026 that the coming season would probably be his last in football.

For fans, this means an unfamiliar sight. Portugal go into an away game in Denmark without their captain in the building. The team that beat Norway must now carry on without him.

The next question is simple. Will Jesus stick with Ramos, and will Portugal keep winning without Ronaldo?
