Silverchair rule out 2026 NRL Grand Final performance

Silverchair will not play the 2026 NRL Grand Final.
The band confirmed the decision in a statement posted to its official Facebook page ahead of Sunday, Oct. 4, when the championship decider is scheduled at Sydney's Accor Stadium. The statement was reported on Oct. 1 by Billboard.
"We're way too rusty, so sorry, no can do," said Daniel Johns, Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou. The trio added: "We won't be taking the stage, but we'll be supporting as loudly as everyone else and there in spirit."
The message closed with a show of team loyalty. "For the first time in ages, the three of us actually agree wholeheartedly about something: GO KNIGHTS!!!" the band said.
The direct reply leaves no room for doubt. It was issued by the band members themselves, in their own words, rather than through the league or a promoter. The tone was brief and apologetic, ruling out an appearance while stressing they would still be following along as supporters.
The NRL is Australia's top professional rugby league competition, and the Grand Final is its championship match to close the season. This year's Grand Final week covers two title deciders, the NRL and NRLW Telstra Premiership Grand Finals, the men's and women's finals, according to the NRL. The league published its guide to the week on Sept. 30, with both matches forming part of the Oct. 4 programme in Sydney.
Silverchair's announcement follows uncertainty around the pre-match entertainment, the live music slot staged before kick-off. Australian singer Tones and I had been slated as the headline act for that slot. Negotiations with the singer then collapsed, leaving the Oct. 4 match set to go ahead without pre-match entertainment when last reported, ABC News said on Sept. 21.
The two updates now sit close together in the build-up to Sunday. The first removed the planned headline act. The second removed Silverchair as a possible fallback in the minds of some fans, with the band stepping forward to say it would not be filling the gap.
For fans, this means the entertainment picture is unchanged days out from the game. No replacement act had been confirmed in the verified reports. Attention now turns back to the football, with the men's and women's premierships to be decided on the same day at Accor Stadium.
