Charlotte Kirk is leading a new psychological thriller now in production in Kentucky, built around a kidnapping that turns on the kidnapper.

Deadline reported the project exclusively on 1 October, with principal photography, the main shoot, under way. The film is called The Spiral Down and is based on a story by Neil Marshall. A psychological thriller, in plain terms, is a suspense story driven by unstable minds and shifting control rather than chases alone.

Aaron Mirtes is directing, guiding performance and camera on set. Kirk is also producing, alongside Karlos Ways and Alessandra Williams, a role that covers creative and practical decisions from casting through to delivery.

Kirk heads a large ensemble. Costas Mandylor, Michael Pare and Alessandra Williams take central roles, with Mike Ferguson, Adam Tsekhman, Matthew Fahey, Darren Weiss, Anna Clols, Jane Konsol and Courtney Warner rounding out the cast. Earlier coverage noted the line-up brought in performers linked to Saw and DC screen projects, widening the film's genre roots Yahoo.

The story centres on Mary Doyle. She is abducted by a serial killer. She is then revealed to be a dangerous escapee from a psychiatric institution with a violent past. The set-up starts as a crime story. It shifts once Doyle's history comes into view.

That switch resets the power balance. The victim is not what she first seems. The captor has taken someone with her own history of violence. The tension comes from watching who controls the room.

The shoot is based in Louisville, Kentucky, where the production has been filming on location, as noted by WLKY. Working on location means using real streets, houses and businesses rather than sets built on a sound stage. The Kentucky base covers the main block of filming now under way.

The Spiral Down continues a familiar creative partnership. Kirk has worked with Marshall before on The Reckoning, The Lair, Duchess and Compulsion. Marshall provides the underlying story here, with Mirtes in the director's chair.

What makes this stand out for thriller fans is the double switch. A hunt story becomes something else once Doyle's past surfaces. It gives Kirk a part that starts vulnerable and turns dangerous.
