Lil Nas X has released “World’s Greatest,” his first single in more than a year and a half.

The song arrived on Thursday, Oct. 1, one day after he announced it on Wednesday, Sept. 30. A single is a standalone song put out ahead of, or instead of, an album. Billboard reported the release details, while Yahoo noted on Sept. 30 that the song was set for Thursday, Oct. 1.

It is his first new music since June, when he told fans he had spent a few months in rehab for mental health support. He said the stay followed a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, a health condition that affects mood, energy and daily functioning. Rehab in this sense means a period of supervised care focused on health and recovery.

That stretch from June to October explains the gap. More than 18 months without a single is a long pause for an artist who releases regularly. For listeners who have been waiting, this release ends that quiet period.

The new song carries a family tribute. The accompanying video features a voicemail from his late mother, Tamikia Hill, in which she encourages him to “never give up.” Hill died in August, two months before the release.

The video closes with a dedication on screen: “In loving memory Tamikia Hill. Love u forever mommy.” It was filmed in Atlanta by Phillip Youmans.

On the music itself, the credits are short. “World’s Greatest” was written by Lil Nas X and produced by C. WRAY and Steve Rusch. A producer in this context shapes the sound of the recording, from the instruments to the final mix.

What makes this stand out is how much personal news is folded into one release. The June health update, the loss in August and the return in October are all named in the song’s rollout.

For fans, this means the conversation around Lil Nas X shifts from his time away to new material. The announcement-to-release turnaround was just one day, so many listeners will have found the song and the video together.
