Rockstar says GTA 6 keeps scale and detail at once

Rockstar Games says it did not trade size for detail in Grand Theft Auto VI.
Co-studio head of Rockstar North Aaron Garbut told Game Informer the team refused to compromise scale for detail, or detail for interaction. His version is blunter. Everything is dialled up.
“Detail, scope, breadth, scale, interaction, and density,” Garbut said. “We have never created anything close to this before.” The comments were reported by GameSpot on 1 October 2026.
The game has a launch date of November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Sony and Microsoft’s current consoles. It takes place in Leonida, a fictional stand-in for Florida. Players explore it as an open world, a large map they can move through freely rather than level by level.
Rockstar points to wildlife and weather as two measures of that density. The game will include more than 170 animal species, including cane toads and monkeys. It also features a new dynamic weather system, which changes conditions across the map as play continues.
For players, this means a busier world to watch as well as to drive and walk through. Small creatures share space with city streets. Storms roll in without a loading screen.
The details come from Game Informer’s November 2026 issue, with Grand Theft Auto VI as the cover story. The digital version was released on 29 September 2026, according to Game Informer.
The cover story runs to 14 pages. It includes new developer interviews with staff at Rockstar Games and 12 exclusive new screenshots. Garbut’s role at the studio was identified by IGN as co-studio head of Rockstar North, the Rockstar arm leading development.
What makes this stand out is how Rockstar is framing the work. Not as bigger or smaller. As both at once.
