Starter, the American sportswear brand known for sideline jackets, has pulled its 1986 New York Giants designs out of the archive. The new Starter x New York Giants ’86 Championship Capsule, a small limited collection, commemorates the Giants’ first Super Bowl win in 1986, according to WWD. The launch lands just before the anniversary game on Oct. 4.

The range reissues pieces worn by players and staff during that championship run, drawing on Starter’s archives. It centres on Starter’s signature satin jackets alongside archival sideline pieces, the coats and warm-ups worn at the edge of the field, reworked for modern wear. It is built for the stands.

The project has a direct link to that locker room. Carl Banks played for the New York Giants, the professional American football team, from 1984 to 1995 and was part of the 1986 championship side. Banks is now president of GIII Sports, the licensing group that holds the Starter licence.

The anniversary centres on the field. On Oct. 4 the Giants host the Arizona Cardinals at MetLife Stadium in the 1986 Championship Celebration Game. The current squad will wear Legacy Blue uniforms, throwback-style kits, with a special anniversary logo for the occasion.

Members of the 1986 team will greet fans in the plaza before kick-off and return to the field at half-time for an on-field recognition. Bill Parcells was head coach of that 1986 team. That season ended with victory in Super Bowl XXI, the league’s title game, part of a season-long tribute the club is staging across this season, according to NJBiz.

Starter will run an activation in the stadium plaza around the game. It will include a photo booth, archival-inspired product, games and interactive experiences. Fans who make a purchase can collect a limited-edition airbrushed T-shirt free while supplies last. The collection will be sold at the stadium and on the Starter website.

The game sits inside a wider 40th anniversary platform celebrating the 1986 team, presented by Starter, according to the New York Giants. Phil Simms and Banks told stories from 1986 to open the programme in June. The club has framed the year as a full-season look back rather than a single night.

For fans, this means the throwback is not only on the players. The same type of jackets once seen on the 1986 sideline will be on sale in the concourse while the men who wore them stand a few metres away.
