Willard Ahdritz has launched Ahdritz Capital Partners, a music and media technology investment firm, on October 1.

Ahdritz is Founder and Managing Partner, the role that leads the firm and its investment decisions. The launch was announced in a GlobeNewswire press release on the same day. Business Insider

The timing is tight. The launch came twelve weeks after Ahdritz left Kobalt Music Group on July 7. That was the day Primary Wave Music's acquisition of the company closed. He stepped down as Chairman of Kobalt's board when that transaction completed. Music Business Worldwide

Ahdritz knows Kobalt well. He founded the company in 2000. He then led it for more than two decades, first as chief executive and later as Chairman.

The new firm will operate as one global team across New York and Stockholm. Its Investment Partners, the senior staff who source and manage deals, are Isabel Keulen and Stephen Langer. Keulen is based in Stockholm. Langer is a former Lazard banker and started with the firm in May, two months before the Kobalt sale completed.

Ahdritz Capital Partners has set out two areas for investment. The first is media infrastructure and systems. That covers the software and back-office services that move music, data and payments around the industry. The second is fandom and audience platforms. That covers the tools and services that help artists find listeners, communicate with them and build income beyond a single release.

He is not new to backing startups. In 2023, while still Kobalt's Chairman, Ahdritz led a seven-figure funding round in un:hurd, an artist marketing platform. He has also set up an investment advisory firm called Ahdritz & Co and an investment vehicle called Ahdritz Holding LLC, the type of company used to hold stakes in other businesses.

The Ahdritz Capital name had already surfaced before the formal launch. In June, Willard Ahdritz of Ahdritz Capital was set to join Madverse Music Group as lead investor and board member in connection with its growth capital raise. A growth capital raise is funding brought in to expand a business, and a lead investor is the party that commits the largest share and often takes a board seat. Yahoo Finance

For now, the firm presents itself as a specialist backer rather than a buyer of song catalogues. Its focus is the technology around music, not the rights themselves.
