Lindberg Turns Glasses Into Shadows at Armory Show

Your glasses usually help you see. At the Armory Show in New York City, Danish eyewear brand Lindberg turned them into shadows instead. Its new installation plays with light to make familiar frames do something unfamiliar.
Called Enigma of Vision, the work is site-specific, meaning it was made for that one spot, and was created with Italian artist Fabrizio Corneli, Dezeen reported. It opened on 24 September as part of the city's annual fair for contemporary art. The installation is made up of two linked artworks, Seed and Eyecatcher, built to be experienced together.
Seed hides its trick. It is a sculpture with a concealed light source inside. At first there is little to see. Then, as visitors move around it and interact with it, an image of the globe appears, formed out of light and shadow rather than paint or print.
Eyecatcher starts with something many people will recognise. It centres on a selection of Lindberg's recognisable glasses frames. The frames are not presented for wearing here. They are transformed into sources of shadows, so their thin lines and curves are projected large into the space around them.
New York is not the last stop for the work. Enigma of Vision will also feature at West Bund Art and Design in Shanghai from 10 to 15 November. That second showing takes the same pairing of eyewear and light to an audience in China, a few weeks after the Armory Show edition closes.
Lindberg described the collaboration as an exploration of art, light and design in posts around the fair on Instagram. The brand has been building a presence at the fair over several editions. It first took part in the Armory Show in 2024 in collaboration with American photography and sculpture artist Letha Wilson. Brooklyn-based artist Yuko Nishikawa has also created delicate sculptural mobiles for Lindberg for the show.
For fans, this means a chance to handle art with your feet as much as your eyes. Stand in one place and you get one picture. Move, and the picture moves with you.
