Music Box Films picks up Amy Goodman documentary for North America

Music Box Films has acquired North American rights to Steal This Story, Please!, the documentary about independent journalist Amy Goodman, Variety reported on 2 Oct 2026. The deal covers theatrical and home entertainment, meaning cinemas plus DVD, Blu-ray and digital, in the United States and Canada.
The film is directed by Carl Deal and Tia Lessin. It follows Goodman, the host of Democracy Now!, the independent news programme, through her work as a reporter.
The rollout is already mapped. Music Box Films is taking over theatrical bookings and will put the film out on all major digital platforms on 20 Oct. A DVD and Blu-ray release will follow.
Before that, there is a live online screening on 13 Oct at 8 p.m. ET. It will be followed by a live question-and-answer session with Goodman, Lessin and Deal.
The documentary premiered at the 2025 Telluride Film Festival. It was later selected as a Centerpiece screening in the 16th annual DOC NYC lineup, Variety reported in Oct 2025.
Festival audiences responded fast. The film has won audience awards at 11 festivals, including Mill Valley, Palm Springs, Santa Barbara and Woodstock, according to Variety.
It also built a steady cinema run. It opened at the IFC Center in New York in April, took over $30,000 in the United States in its opening weekend there, and was held over for 12 weeks. It has since played in more than 50 markets nationally and grossed close to $1 million in the United States.
For viewers, this means wider access. The long New York hold and the national bookings kept it on big screens. The digital and disc releases bring it into homes.
