Teen Orators Take Centre Stage as Speak. Heads to Documentary+

Speak., a documentary that follows five teenagers into a national public-speaking final, will stream on Documentary+ from 15 October, Deadline reported. The same date brings rental and purchase options on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video and Google Play. The dual launch gives audiences a choice between subscription streaming and one-off rental.
The film centres on high-school students competing in Original Oratory at the National Tournament run by the National Speech & Debate Association, the organisation behind school speech and debate in the United States. In Original Oratory, students write and perform their own speeches, judged on writing, delivery and argument. The field follows five of the country's top teenage competitors, Deadline reported, through preparation and performance at the national final.
That final has been described as the "Super Bowl of public speaking," Deadline reported. The label reflects its scale. Hundreds of qualifiers arrive after regional rounds, and the oratory final is one of its most watched events.
Speak. was directed by Jennifer Tiexiera and co-directed by Guy Mossman, Deadline reported. It is a Vox Pop Films production, with actor Josh Gad as executive producer. Gad has a direct link to the subject. He is a two-time Original Oratory national champion.
Tiexiera is co-founder of Lady & Bird, a female-led documentary production company, Deadline reported. Mossman works across documentary directing and cinematography. Their film premiered on 23 January 2025 in Park City, Utah, in U.S. Competition at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.
Since Sundance, the film has picked up four awards. It won the Kathleen Bryan Edwards Award for Human Rights at Full Frame, the Jury Award for Best Documentary at Thin Line, and Best Documentary Feature at Lost Weekend. It also took the Grand Prize of Shine Global's 2025 Resilience Awards.
What makes this stand out for new viewers is access. Speech and debate is familiar in American schools but rarely seen up close on screen. For fans, this means a chance to watch the writing, rehearsal and judging process that usually stays inside school halls.
Documentary+, a streaming service dedicated to non-fiction, will become the film's streaming home. Viewers who prefer to rent or buy can do so from 15 October on three major storefronts. No ticket sales or box-office figures have been reported for the release.
