Rivian Built Almost 20,000 Vehicles in Q3 as R2 Enters Production

Rivian produced 19,751 vehicles and delivered 19,248 vehicles in the third quarter of 2026. Production rose 85% from a year earlier, and deliveries rose 45%. The company reported the figures on Oct. 2, 2026, with R2 now contributing to volume alongside the existing lineup. The Verge
Rivian reaffirmed full-year 2026 delivery guidance of 65,000 to 70,000 vehicles. That forecast is unchanged from July 2, 2026, when the company raised it from 62,000 to 67,000 vehicles. Reuters
The breakdown by model is as follows. Rivian expects full-year deliveries of its R1T truck, R1S SUV and electric delivery van to remain flat. Added volume is expected to come from R2. The company told investors it expects to sell upwards of 25,000 R2 vehicles in the first year of R2 production.
CEO RJ Scaringe said "R2 is the most important thing for the company because it takes Rivian from subscale to a scaled manufacturer." Rivian was founded in 2009, is headquartered in Irvine, CA, and operates a 3.3M sq ft plant in Normal, IL. Its initial public offering was on Nov. 10, 2021.
Public customer deliveries of R2 began June 9, 2026, when Rivian opened orders for reservation holders. The first customer vehicles were R2 Performance with Launch Package models. Rivian had introduced the full R2 lineup with trims and pricing on March 12, 2026.
R2 is a clean-sheet program, meaning a new design rather than an update to an existing vehicle. It is a midsize SUV with seating for five. The lineup starts at $44,990, with reservations requiring a $100 deposit in the U.S. and $150 in Canada. R2 and R3 are built on an all-new midsize vehicle platform — the shared chassis and engineering underneath — and will be offered with two battery sizes. Both will offer Single-Motor RWD, Dual-Motor AWD, and Tri-Motor configurations with two rear motors and one front motor. Rivian
R2 and R3 use an all-new 4695 battery cell, a size label that shapes cost and packaging. The larger pack delivers over 300 miles of range on a single charge. The quickest powertrain accelerates 0-60 mph in under 3 seconds. Both support DC fast charging with native NACS, the plug standard now common in North America, and CCS via adapter, charging from 10% to 80% in less than 30 minutes. The perception stack, the cameras and sensors that feed driver-assistance features, uses 11 cameras and five radars.
R3 extends the same architecture in a smaller package. Rivian describes R3 as a midsize crossover with tighter dimensions than R2 and a lower price point than R2. R3X is the performance variant of the R3. No delivery timing for R3 was included in the third-quarter production disclosure.
Rivian hired Greg Revelle as Chief Customer Officer on Jan. 12, 2026. Rivian and Redwood Materials announced an energy storage partnership for manufacturing on April 14, 2026. Rivian announced a CFO transition plan on Aug. 27, 2026.
Looking at execution, the third quarter is the first real test of repeatability. A single strong quarter can reflect launch inventory, overtime, and early reservation fulfillment. Sustained quarterly output near 19,000 units would put the 65,000 to 70,000 vehicle guidance within reach and confirm the tooling, cell supply, and end-of-line quality for the midsize platform. In my view, investors and engineers should watch build consistency, delivery conversion, and service capacity more closely than headline year-over-year percentages.
The broader context here is that the flat outlook for R1T, R1S and the van leaves Normal and the supply chain focused on one variable. That variable is R2 ramp rate and cost curve. Scaringe's comment about scale is a manufacturing point, not only a product point. If Rivian can hold that focus while scaling 4695 supply, charging validation, and driver-assistance calibration across three drive configurations, the payoff is a lower-cost, higher-volume base that can support R3 without another factory-scale change. I have covered enough production ramps since the PC era to know that kind of steadiness is what makes new technology affordable.
