Rivian's R2 Becomes Its Best-Selling Vehicle as Q3 Revenue Rises and Guidance Goes Up

Rivian reported third-quarter 2026 results on October 29, 2026, and said its R2 SUV was the company's best-selling vehicle in the quarter. The company also raised its 2026 delivery guidance, its forecast for how many vehicles it will hand to customers, to 67,000 to 70,000 EVs, up from 65,000 to 70,000. It is the second upward revision of the year (TechCrunch).
The quarter's operating figures were 19,751 vehicles built and 19,248 delivered. Revenue came to $2.2 billion. Rivian reported a net loss of $913 million, compared with $1.2 billion in the same period a year earlier. Build volume therefore ran about 500 units ahead of deliveries, a gap that will show up in inventory and in the next quarter's delivery count. Rivian's second-quarter revenue had risen 27% to $1.66 billion (Reuters), so third-quarter revenue shows a large sequential increase.
The R2 lineup was introduced on March 12, 2026, with full trims and pricing shared at that time (Rivian newsroom). The SUV launched in June at a starting price just under $60,000. Rivian began public customer deliveries and opened orders to reservation holders on June 9, 2026. The first version available to order was the R2 Performance with Launch Package, which includes Autonomy+. Rivian said the R2 Premium trim would arrive in late 2026, and the R2 Standard trim would follow in 2027 (Rivian).
Rather than opening orders to all reservation holders at once, Rivian sent invitations in batches on a rolling basis, starting June 9, and notified customers by email. According to the company, reservation timestamp and delivery location were the primary factors determining when a holder received an invitation. Areas surrounding Rivian Service + Demo Centers were generally scheduled sooner. Current Rivian owners received accelerated delivery timing, and customers with expiring leases could enter lease information in their Rivian Account for consideration in invitation timing. A randomly selected group of reservation holders was included in the early batches, which Rivian said was intended to refine its timing estimates. Demo drives at Rivian Spaces began the same day, with priority for holders who had been invited to order. For confirmed orders, Rivian said customers could expect delivery within two to six weeks. Configuration and pricing are not locked until an order is placed and confirmed (Rivian).
Rivian is headquartered in Southern California, with additional offices in Northern California, Michigan, Arizona, Vancouver, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Its shares trade on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol RIVN. The company priced its IPO on November 9, 2021, and began trading the following day. KPMG LLP is its independent registered public accounting firm, and Rivian has never declared or paid a cash dividend on its capital stock (Rivian investor relations).
The broader context here is the cost structure behind the volume. A $913 million quarterly net loss is still large, even though it narrowed from $1.2 billion a year earlier. The R2 has to carry that improvement, since its margin profile depends on how many units are built and delivered, and in which trims. Premium and Standard are not yet on sale, so the current mix leans toward the launch configuration. Whether the guidance raise holds through the fourth quarter will depend on the late-2026 Premium ramp and on how quickly the invitation backlog converts into confirmed orders.
In my view, the more instructive detail is the allocation design. Rivian used timestamps, geography, lease expirations and a randomized sample to meter demand. That is closer to how a constrained manufacturing line is run than to a conventional dealer launch. If the gap between builds and deliveries reflects that metering, the R2 may give Rivian a clearer view of regional demand than its earlier models did. For a company still scaling production, that would be useful, and the next quarter's numbers should begin to show whether it is the case.
