James Gunn writing next film as Superman sequel takes shape

James Gunn is already writing his next film while editors piece together Superman: Man of Tomorrow.
The writer-director said the assembly cut is complete, according to Variety. An assembly cut is a rough first edit that puts all the filmed scenes in story order. Filming had wrapped by August 2026.
Man of Tomorrow is due in cinemas on 9 July 2027 as the sequel to 2025's Superman, Variety reported. Gunn is writing and directing the film, as reported by Deadline. He has run DC Studios alongside Peter Safran since 2022.
The story pairs hero and villain. Superman teams up with Lex Luthor to take on Brainiac, the cold, super-intelligent alien collector. Gunn outlined that team-up in an interview with Howard Stern, according to Deadline. David Corenswet returns as Superman. Nicholas Hoult plays Luthor. Lars Eidinger plays Brainiac.
The wider cast is back too. Rachel Brosnahan returns as reporter Lois Lane. Skyler Gisondo returns as photographer Jimmy Olsen. Sara Sampaio returns as Eve Teschmacher.
Isabela Merced is back as Hawkgirl, the winged hero. Nathan Fillion is back as Guy Gardner, one of the Green Lanterns. Edi Gathegi is back as Mister Terrific, the inventor and problem solver. Milly Alcock returns as Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin. Aaron Pierre joins as John Stewart, another Green Lantern.
Production had been eyed to start in April 2026, Deadline reported. Warner Bros. Discovery chief executive David Zaslav told Wall Street analysts in August 2026 that the sequel looks "amazing", according to Deadline.
For fans, this means a long wait with work still to do. An assembly is only the start. Music, effects and fine cutting come next. Gunn has not named the new project he is writing in the meantime.
