James Gunn Wraps Filming on Superman Sequel 'Man of Tomorrow'
James Gunn has announced that principal photography on the DC Studios Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow has wrapped. The writer-director shared the news on Threads, describing the shoot as "truly a joyful experience" and expressing "immense gratitude to my cast and crew" (Deadline).
David Corenswet will reprise his role as Clark Kent, leading a returning cast that includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher. Nicholas Hoult is back as Lex Luthor, and Gunn marked the final shot by posting a photo of himself and Hoult swimming together after the cameras stopped rolling (Deadline).
The sequel also widens the DCU's roster. Lars Eidinger has been cast as Brainiac, the cybernetic supervillain long rumoured for the franchise. Isabela Merced returns as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner (one of DC's Green Lanterns), Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Adria Arjona as Maxima. Aaron Pierre, who plays John Stewart in HBO's Lanterns series, will appear, and Xolo Maridueña reprises his Blue Beetle role (Deadline).
Gunn has been characteristically open throughout production. In June, he shared an image on X appearing to show Corenswet in a new Superman suit (Yahoo Entertainment). He also posted live from the set on Threads, fielding questions from fans about everything from DCU development to how actors are paid during a production.
The Paramount-Warner Bros. merger has prompted questions about whether the broader DCU slate might slow down. Gunn addressed that directly, stating that "nothing is on hold" and that the Batman film The Brave and the Bold is "in no way on hold" (Deadline). Those comments came via separate Threads posts, giving fans a direct line to the studio chief's thinking on the merger's impact.
Man of Tomorrow is set for theatrical release on 9 July 2027. That places it squarely in the summer corridor where the biggest franchise films compete for opening-weekend dominance — the domestic market, covering the United States and Canada, where tentpole releases typically earn a large share of their opening grosses before expanding worldwide.
The wrap leaves visual effects, post-production, and the scoring process ahead, all of which typically run for the better part of a year on a film of this scale. Gunn and his team now have roughly eleven months before that July 2027 date arrives.
