Jagex Pulls Dragon Slayer 2 Trailer After AI Backlash at RuneFest

Jagex has pulled the cinematic trailer for RuneScape's Dragon Slayer 2 quest after viewers spotted a hand with six fingers and accused the video of using generative AI.
The trailer debuted at RuneFest, Jagex's annual convention for community events and game reveals. The 2026 edition was held in Birmingham, UK, over the weekend before Monday, 5 October 2026, according to the company Jagex.
The video was meant to build excitement for Dragon Slayer II, a story mission — known as a quest — for RuneScape 3, the long-running online fantasy game. That quest is due to arrive in an update called Hoard of Dragons in early 2027.
Fans noticed problems fast. One shot showed an extra finger. Other details looked warped. Anger followed, with players accusing Jagex of relying on generative AI, software that creates images and video from prompts and training data Eurogamer.
The timing stung. Days earlier, Jagex staff had reaffirmed opposition to generative AI after a third-party clothing collaboration drew criticism for using the technology in its design.
Jagex has apologised for the trailer concerns and taken the video down while it investigates urgently. The company said the trailer was produced by a trusted external partner who had explicitly confirmed that generative AI would not be used.
Its stated position is that it does not use generative AI to create games, artwork or creative assets and will not knowingly allow it to be used on its behalf. Jagex said this was the second time in quick succession that concerns had arisen through trusted partners. That points to an issue with its own processes.
Immediately after RuneFest, the company said it will overhaul its review processes. It will also work with and commission creators from the community to tell the story of Dragon Slayer II.
For fans, this means the quest itself is still on the way. The trailer is not. RuneFest also brought wider reveals, including a fourth online game in the RuneScape franchise, RuneScape Reignited and Old School Menaphos, plus future roadmaps for Old School RuneScape and RuneScape Dragonwilds.
