RuneScape is getting a fourth MMO, built in Unreal Engine.

Jagex announced the project under the working title RS4 at RuneFest in Birmingham, as reported on 4 October 2026. An MMO, or massively multiplayer online game, is a persistent online world shared by thousands of players at once. Eurogamer

The game is early in development. Jagex said it is at least a few years from release and has not settled on an official name.

RS4 will return to Gielinor, the fantasy setting for the RuneScape series. Jagex plans to rebuild that world in Unreal Engine, the widely used 3D toolset from Epic Games, and set the story in Gielinor's Sixth Age.

The starting point is Ashenfall. That region sits to the north-east of the main map and was first introduced in RuneScape: Dragonwilds, Jagex's co-operative survival game set in the same universe.

The studio had a second announcement for the franchise. Jagex is developing a RuneScape animated adaptation with creator Charlie "MoistCr1TiKaL" White and Los Angeles production company Lyrical Media.

No release date, format, or story details for the animation were given. The partnership pairs Jagex with White as a creative collaborator and Lyrical Media as production partner.

For fans, this means a long wait with two separate threads to follow. The MMO extends a series that has run for more than two decades across its main games, while the animation takes the setting beyond games for the first time at this scale.

Jagex has not said how RS4 will sit alongside its existing titles, or how it will be paid for. Those details, including platforms, pricing and subscription plans, are still to come as development continues.
