Anthony Mackie Returns to Broadway as Macbeth in Spring 2027

Anthony Mackie will return to Broadway to play Macbeth in spring 2027.
Mackie revealed the casting to Deadline in an exclusive published Oct. 5, 2026, according to Deadline. The run ends a 16-year absence from Broadway.
Rehearsals start in February 2027. Previews, the first paid performances before an official opening night, are planned for late March or early April. The production will run through July in a Broadway theater that has not been named.
The Broadway run is a New York transfer of a staging by director Max Webster. Webster first mounted the production at London's Donmar Warehouse in late 2023 with David Tennant and Cush Jumbo in the leads. It later moved to London's Harold Pinter Theatre for a sold-out 11-week season.
That London version was built around sound. It used a binaural system designed by Gareth Fry, with the audience in headphones while actors spoke into microphones.
Mackie was last on Broadway 16 years ago in Martin McDonagh's A Behanding in Spokane. The 90-minute play opened March 4, 2010, according to Playbill. Mackie originated the role of Toby alongside Christopher Walken, Sam Rockwell and Zoe Kazan, under director John Crowley.
His earlier New York credits go back further. On Broadway, he appeared in Drowning Crow and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Off-Broadway, his credits include A Soldier's Play and McReele.
On screen, Mackie plays Sam Wilson, also known as Captain America, in the Marvel movies. He said that after Macbeth closes he will return to Avengers work for Secret Wars.
For fans, this means a short window to see him. A spring-to-July run is a limited engagement, a run with a set closing date, and Shakespeare with a film star tends to sell on advance, tickets bought for future performances long before the lights go down.
