The full Sicario team is coming back together.

Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin are set to return for Sicario 3, according to Deadline in a report published on 5 October. It is the first time since the 2015 original that all three leads are lined up for the same film.

Blunt plays FBI agent Kate, pulled into a covert operation on the US-Mexico border. Brolin plays CIA operative Matt Graver, and Del Toro plays Alejandro, the shadowy enforcer at the centre of the mission. Denis Villeneuve directed that first film. Del Toro and Brolin then carried on without Blunt for Sicario: Day of the Soldado, released in theatres in 2018.

The new film brings in fresh blood behind the camera. Padraic McKinley will direct from a script by Steven Knight. Taylor Sheridan, who created the franchise and wrote the first two films, is not writing this time around.

Backing comes from Black Label Media and Thunder Road, the companies behind the push to get the third film made. Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill and Thad Luckinbill are producing for Black Label Media. Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee are producing for Thunder Road, with Ed McDonnell returning as a producer.

Plot details are being kept under wraps. The plan, for now, is to begin shooting at the top of the year.

There is no distributor locked in yet. Lionsgate released the first two Sicario films. This one is expected to be taken to market shortly, which in industry terms means shown to rival studios and buyers to bid for distribution rights, and several studios are already showing interest, according to Deadline.

For fans, this means the long wait may finally be ending. Brolin said in August that a third film “is happening”, according to Deadline. Eight years after the last outing, Kate, Graver and Alejandro look set to share the screen again.
