Josh Brolin Confirms Sicario 3 Is Happening, With Taylor Sheridan Writing
Josh Brolin says a third Sicario film is in the works. The actor revealed the news in an interview with ScreenRant, telling the outlet that the threequel "is happening" and that production is expected to begin "soon" (Deadline).
Brolin has played CIA officer Matt Graver across both previous entries in the franchise. The character first appeared in 2015's Sicario, directed by Denis Villeneuve, where Graver recruits FBI agent Kate Macer — played by Emily Blunt — to a government task force operating along the US-Mexico border. The task force's enforcement arm is Alejandro, a shadowy operative played by Benicio Del Toro. The word "sicario" is Mexican Spanish for "hitman."
The 2018 sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, shifted the focus to the Graver-Alejandro relationship under director Stefano Sollima and added Isabela Merced to the cast. Together, the two films have grossed more than $160 million globally (Deadline).
Taylor Sheridan, who wrote both previous Sicario screenplays, has penned the third instalment as well (Deadline). Sheridan's name has only grown in the years since Day of the Soldado: he created the Yellowstone television franchise and has launched a string of series including Landman, The Madison, Lioness, Tulsa King and Mayor of Kingstown.
Collider, reporting on 21 August 2026, characterised Brolin's announcement as the first official update on the long-awaited project (Collider). The A.V. Club separately noted that further details on Graver's continued adventures would be announced "soon" (A.V. Club).
No director is yet attached to the threequel. No release date has been set. Which cast members beyond Brolin will return has not been confirmed.
For fans of the franchise, the confirmation ends a stretch of uncertainty that has stretched nearly eight years since Day of the Soldado opened in 2018. Sheridan's packed television slate had left the film's prospects an open question. Brolin's words, brief as they were, put the project back on the board — with a writer attached and a production start on the horizon.
