Spiegel & Grau puts full book catalogue on The Black List for screen hunters

Spiegel & Grau has put its entire bookshelf where film and television buyers hunt for stories.
The independent publisher has partnered with The Black List to bring its full catalogue of frontlist and backlist fiction and nonfiction to the site's material discovery database, a searchable library for adaptation rights, as Deadline reported in an exclusive on 5 October 2026 Deadline. The shelves are now open.
The deal is The Black List's first with an independent publisher and its second with a trade publisher, according to the same report Deadline. It follows a collaboration with Simon & Schuster that added more than 6,000 titles to the platform, reported in June Publishers Weekly.
Professionals in film, television, theatre and publishing with free Black List industry accounts can search and browse the Spiegel & Grau titles by title, author, genre and other book information Deadline. The Black List, best known for its annual survey of unproduced screenplays, also runs blcklst.com as a marketplace where writers list scripts and rights holders list books and plays for producers to find.
For each book, Spiegel & Grau supplies metadata including imprint, cover art and description. When authors linked to the publisher add those titles to their own Black List profiles, key project fields are pre-populated, which removes duplicate data entry and keeps credits consistent Deadline.
The catalogue carries screen history. Spiegel & Grau published Bryan Stevenson's Just Mercy and Piper Kerman's Orange Is the New Black, both of which reached the screen after publication. Recent bestsellers in the new independent catalogue include Beartooth by Callan Wink, The Fire Agent by David Baerwald and The Comfort of Crows by Margaret Renkl.
Several titles are already in development for adaptation. They include Culpability by Bruce Holsinger, Everything/Nothing/Someone by Alice Carriere with producer Lauri Firstenberg and IF Innovation Foundation, Go As A River by Shelley Read with producers Paula Mazur and Mitchell Kaplan at Mazur Kaplan Company, and The Boys by Katie Hafner with producers Ross Katz and Jonathan Krauss Deadline.
Other titles are listed as yet to be adapted. They include Freyja by Margret Ann Thors, Forest Euphoria by Patricia Ononiwu Kaishian and Out of the Sky by Matti Friedman.
What makes this stand out is scale for a small house. Spiegel & Grau, led by president and director of film and television Liza Wachter, was first established in 2006 and has operated as an independent since its revival in 2021. Placing the whole list in one industry search puts backlist and new releases side by side for buyers who might otherwise miss them.
