Bleecker Street to Enter Mike Leigh's Tender Loving Care as Comedy at Golden Globes

Bleecker Street will campaign Mike Leigh's Tender Loving Care in the musical or comedy categories at the 84th Golden Globes, Variety reported on 5 Oct 2026.
The decision fixes the film's lane for the awards season. The Globes divide films into two groups: drama, and musical or comedy. Bleecker Street has chosen the second path.
Marion Bailey will compete for best actress in a musical or comedy, according to the same report. Kate O'Flynn, Alice Bailey Johnson and Paul Jesson will all compete in the supporting acting races.
The film is due in theatres on 4 Dec. Bleecker Street is also funding the picture, Variety reported in August.
The story follows two social workers, their family and the people they look after. That is a familiar Leigh canvas. Small working lives, close family ties, and pressure from the outside world.
The awards push follows a strong start in Spain. Tender Loving Care won the Golden Shell, the top prize, at the San Sebastian Film Festival in September. It also won the best screenplay prize there.
O'Flynn won the Silver Shell for best leading performance for the film at the same festival. The prize put her at the centre of the early campaign. The Globes plan now places her in supporting.
What makes this stand out is Leigh's record with the Globes. Sally Hawkins won best actress in a musical or comedy for his Happy-Go-Lucky. That history gives voters a reference point for his work in this category.
The cast bring their own links to Leigh. Bailey played Sophia Booth in his 2014 film Mr. Turner. O'Flynn got her first job from Leigh on Happy-Go-Lucky when she was 21, Variety reported in August.
O'Flynn has had a busy year away from film too. She won an Emmy for supporting comedy actress for Apple TV's Widow's Bay. That win arrived before the San Sebastian prizes.
For fans, this means a clear calendar. Festival prizes in September. A Globe campaign defined in October. A theatrical release in December.
Leigh has said Tender Loving Care will probably be his last film as a director, Variety reported in July. He has won a BAFTA, a Palme d'Or and a Golden Lion across his career.
The wider Globes race is still taking shape. Nikki Glaser is set to host the 84th ceremony, according to the Golden Globes. Leigh and Bailey have already started meeting voters, including an IndieWire x Bleecker Street dinner in Toronto in September.
