Mike Leigh's new film, Tender Loving Care, now has a first trailer, and it has a date for American cinemas. Deadline reported the trailer's release on Thursday 5 November.

The film's distributor, Bleecker Street, will open it in cinemas in Los Angeles and New York on Friday 11 December. Openings in those two cities are a common starting point for films of this kind, which tend to reach other cities later.

The story follows Amy, played by Kate O'Flynn, who moves in with her best friend Rosie after a bitter breakup. Rosie is played by Alice Bailey Johnson. Both women work in social care, the job of supporting people who need help with everyday life, and they sit at opposite ends of the age range. Bleecker Street's official page lists the film as Coming Soon and places it in post-Brexit England, meaning England after Britain left the European Union.

Earlier reviews have described the film in different terms. Variety called it a tale involving social workers, lonely hearts and dementia. The Hollywood Reporter described O'Flynn's character as a social worker who moves in with her best friend after a break-up.

The film has already collected two prizes at the San Sebastián Film Festival, held in the Basque Country of northern Spain. It won the Golden Shell, the festival's top prize, and the award for Best Screenplay, according to Deadline.

For audiences, the next fixed point is the December opening in Los Angeles and New York. Anyone wanting to see the trailer can find it on Deadline's report, and cinema listings should confirm showtimes closer to the date.
