David Brindley, the producer behind Destination X, is lined up to run programmes at Channel 4.

Deadline reported on 6 October 2026 that Brindley is set to replace Ian Katz as Chief Content Officer, the executive who decides what gets commissioned and aired. The appointment has not been formally confirmed by the broadcaster.

Katz leaves this month as Channel 4's longest-serving content chief. The former BBC Newsnight editor held the role for nine years and will vacate it at the end of October, according to Deadline.

Brindley knows the channel well. He previously worked in its factual commissioning team and was behind Educating Yorkshire, the Emmy-winning school documentary series he later revived.

He joined producer Twofour as chief creative officer in 2020 and is now its chief executive. Twofour is backed by ITV Studios. It makes the UK and US versions of adventure reality show Destination X and Apple's The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy.

Brindley beat former BBC Three boss Stuart Murphy to the job. The two were the final candidates, Deadline reported.

Murphy launched BBC Three in 2003. He was Sky's director of entertainment channels between 2015 and 2018, then spent five years as chief executive of the English National Opera from 2018.

Others in the running included BBC iPlayer boss Dan McGolpin, Amazon's Clarkson's Farm executive Fozia Khan and Tanya Shaw. Brindley was also among the final four for the BBC's top content job last year.

He will report to new Channel 4 chief executive Priya Dogra. Louisa Compton and Kiran Nataraja will also report to Dogra, with Brindley and Compton sitting on the Channel 4 board.

For viewers, this means a new hand on the remote at a difficult moment. Channel 4 is cutting around 340 staff in what has been reported as its biggest reduction in its 40-year history. About half of commissioning roles are set to go.

Drama and comedy teams are being combined into one scripted unit. Its unscripted divisions, which cover factual, reality and entertainment, are also being merged. That is the team Brindley will inherit.
