Overwatch reveals China-only Defiled Anthem event

China's Overwatch players are getting an event the rest of the world can only watch.
Blizzard has released a trailer for Defiled Anthem, a themed in-game event for Overwatch, its team-based shooter. The footage puts the new looks front and centre. Details of the reveal were published on 6 October 2026. Eurogamer
The collection covers five playable characters: Shion, D.Mon, Kiriko, Reaper and Emre. Skins, the alternate looks that change how a hero appears in a match, sit at the heart of it. Cosmetics, a catch-all term for visual extras such as sprays, charms and poses, fill out the set.
One piece works differently. It is described as a transforming Evolution skin. It changes as a match goes on. Both its look and its audio shift, with new visual effects, the flashes and trails tied to abilities, and new sound effects unfolding during play.
All of it is China-specific for now. None of the Defiled Anthem skins or cosmetics has been announced for players elsewhere. That leaves fans outside China able to see the trailer but not to unlock the items.
Blizzard has done this before. Its earlier China-only Overwatch releases include a crossover with Naraka: Bladepoint, a close-combat action game, and separate exclusive skins for Pharah and Mercy. Those kept a clear line between the Chinese version and the global version.
That line comes down to who runs what. Walter Kong, Blizzard's head of development for live games, said NetEase has responsibility for publishing Blizzard's game in China. Live games, in industry terms, are titles kept going with updates long after launch. Publishing here means operating the local servers, handling approvals and running sales.
The shop is part of that split. The gacha system in Chinese Overwatch, where players pay for a chance at items rather than buying them outright, is different from the system used elsewhere. It is managed by NetEase.
What makes this stand out is the presentation. A full trailer and a named event give Defiled Anthem the weight of a season launch, not a quiet shop refresh. For fans, this means the question is simple: stays in China, or travels.
