Six-part documentary series 'The Watch: America's Nuclear Mission' is heading to Imax cinemas before it reaches streaming. The NFN Productions series follows the men and women who carry out America's nuclear deterrence mission. It is a behind-the-uniform look at a job most people never see.

The limited Imax engagement, meaning a short run on extra-large screens, starts Oct. 22 at the California Science Center Imax Theater. The rollout continues with three more dated stops, as reported by Variety: AMC San Antonio Rivercenter on Nov. 1, the Lockheed Martin Imax Theater at the National Air and Space Museum on Nov. 2, and the Southampton Playhouse on Nov. 11 for a special Veterans Day presentation.

Actor Gary Sinise narrates the series. His voice leads viewers through six episodes. All six will be available to stream on Prime Video in November once the theatre run finishes.

The series was created by Jeff Bolton of NFN Productions. Bolton executive produces alongside Gerry Byrne, meaning they oversee the creative and business side of the show. Ted Schillinger directs. The producing team also includes Steven Chester Prince of Check Engine Films, with Carissa Buffel and Kevin Matusow of The Traveling Picture Show Company.

At the centre is the nuclear triad, the three-part system of bombers, intercontinental ballistic missiles and submarines that underpins US deterrence policy. The production says it was granted access by the Department of Defense, the Navy and the Air Force to film in restricted areas, according to The Watch. That access covers bases, silos and vessels usually closed to cameras.

The series was shot in 4K, or ultra-high-definition, which gives a sharper picture built for big screens. That makes the Imax dates more than a preview.

For viewers, this means two ways to watch. Catch the large-screen, organised cinema outings in October and early November, then stream the full story at home later in November.
