Leicester Tigers have secured prop Archie van der Flier on a new contract. It keeps the young front-rower at the club after a steady climb from loan prospect to first-team regular.

Van der Flier made his competitive debut for Tigers in October 2023 and has since made 27 appearances in all competitions, according to BBC Sport. The prop — the front-row forward who powers the scrum and does the heavy carrying in tight quarters — previously played for Nottingham before forcing his way into the Leicester set-up.

His progress in the Championship, English rugby's second tier, did not go unnoticed. Van der Flier was nominated for Nottingham's Player of the Season in 2023/24 after a string of strong displays on loan. That form earned him a closer look at Leicester, and he was then earmarked to step up to the Senior Squad, the club's main first-team group, in the summer under head coach Geoff Parling.

The move stuck. Leicester rewarded him with a Senior Squad contract ahead of the 2025/26 season, and he has since passed 20 appearances as a full squad member. It is a classic front-row journey. Few props arrive fully formed. Most learn the craft rep by rep in the scrum, where timing and body position matter as much as power.

International recognition has followed. Van der Flier turned out for England A — the second-string national side, one step below the full senior team — against an Ireland XV at Thomond Park in Limerick. He then took a bigger step this summer with a first senior England call-up for the summer Tests.

He was one of eight Tigers players selected by England head coach Steve Borthwick for that squad, according to Leicester Tigers. For a young prop, that kind of exposure matters. Training with the senior group tests set-piece detail and work-rate. It speeds up development.

Parling, now leading the Tigers, has kept faith with him as part of his forward plans.

What makes this stand out is the continuity. Supporters already know what Van der Flier brings. He hits rucks hard. He scrums straight. For fans, this means Leicester are backing a homegrown front-rower who knows the calls, knows the league, and still has room to grow.
