Leicester Tigers hand new deal to young back-row Samuel Williams

Leicester Tigers have kept faith with young back-row Samuel Williams, handing the 21-year-old a new contract. It is reward for a steady rise.
The academy product committed to the club this week, with Leicester confirming the move on 14 October in an announcement titled ‘Re-signings 2026-27: Samuel Williams’. The length of the deal has not been made public, BBC Sport reported on 15 October.
Williams plays in the back row. That means the loose forwards who pack down at the back and sides of the scrum and are first to almost every breakdown. It is heavy-traffic work: tackling, carrying hard into contact and clearing bodies at the ruck, the contest for the ball on the ground after a tackle.
Coming through the academy means learning the club's way from the teens upward. Players train in the same systems, the same language for calls and the same expectations around fitness and discipline. When they step up, the playbook is already familiar and the dressing room is not new.
He made his senior debut in November 2024 in the Prem Rugby Cup. That competition runs alongside the league season and is often used to give young players a first taste of senior rugby. For an academy forward, it is the bridge from age-group rugby to the speed, physicality and relentless pace of the first team.
The 2025-26 season brought his breakthrough. Williams played 10 times across all competitions. Five of those appearances came in the league, where results shape the table and places are hardest to earn. Earning league minutes as a young forward is a clear sign of trust.
Ten games may not sound huge. For a 21-year-old forward it is significant. It means a full pre-season with the senior squad, minutes in different grounds and conditions, and responsibility in tight finishes. Coaches do not hand those minutes out lightly.
For supporters, this means continuity. A player who already knows the calls, the standards and the building stays in the building. There is no settling-in period and no need to learn a new defensive system from scratch.
The next step is obvious. Turn squad minutes into regular starts. That is the jump every young back-row has to make, from impact off the bench to 80-minute reliability week after week.
