Focus Features takes worldwide rights to Outside Man with Ice Cube and Tommy Lee Jones

Focus Features has acquired worldwide rights to Outside Man, a new film starring Ice Cube and Tommy Lee Jones, Deadline reported on 6 October 2026.
Worldwide rights is industry shorthand for full control of distribution. It means one company will guide the film to theatres and later platforms in every territory, rather than splitting those rights among several buyers.
The film is written and directed by Brian Helgeland. Helgeland is an Oscar winner, as noted in earlier trade coverage of the project from April. A writer-director credit means he is responsible for both the script and what happens on set.
Ice Cube plays Ruben Bowman, a former Chicago mob enforcer. Tommy Lee Jones plays Gus Wanamaker, a retired Texas Ranger. The two actors lead the cast, and their characters give the story its two poles: organised crime on one side, law enforcement on the other.
An enforcer, in crime stories, is the person sent to collect debts or enforce orders. A Texas Ranger is a storied state law officer, a title many viewers will know from Westerns and modern crime dramas.
Cameras roll in November. That start date was reported alongside the acquisition news. A November shoot means the production moves quickly from paperwork to physical work, with casting set and crews preparing sets and locations.
Outside Man is a Teton Ridge Entertainment production, the organisation behind the film. The producers listed are Jillian Share, Jen Gorton, Ice Cube, Jeff Kwatinetz and Bill Gerber. Executive producers are Brian Helgeland, Justin Bursch, Madeleine Moore and Ben Hurwitz.
In plain terms, producers run the day-to-day work of getting a film made. Executive producers often come in earlier to shape the package or provide key support. Here the credits show talent sitting on both sides, with Ice Cube and Helgeland each holding a producing stake as well as a creative role.
For fans, this means the pieces are locked. The buyer is set. The leads are set. The shoot is next. No release date was included in the report, so the next hard news will likely come from the set once production is under way.
