Slovenia spoiled Andy Robertson's big night at Hampden Park, coming from behind to beat Scotland in the UEFA Nations League on Tuesday, 6 October 2026.

Scotland had taken four points from three games going into the match. The defeat ended Sébastien Pocognoli's first international camp as Scotland manager on a flat note. The Guardian

The evening had started with celebration. Robertson had reached 100 caps — 100 senior appearances — in Scotland's 2-0 win away to North Macedonia. Before kick-off at Hampden, he was honoured on the pitch for the milestone.

He was joined by three men who know the job well. Gordon Strachan and Alex McLeish, his first two Scotland managers, walked out with Steve Clarke, who departed after failure at the World Cup. The crowd rose for all four.

Scotland nearly fell behind early. In the 13th minute Adam Cerin missed a clear chance to put Slovenia ahead, and Jack Hendry had to clear from three yards from Scotland's own goal.

Instead it was Scotland who struck first. A short free-kick was played to Ben Gannon-Doak. His deflected cross was headed onto a post by Hendry, and Ryan Christie was in the right place to flick the loose ball home from close range.

Robertson then showed why the night was his. Just before half-time, Danijel Sturm slipped a pass through for Zan Vipotnik. Robertson threw himself into a sliding block to deny the equaliser. Scotland went in 1-0 up.

The lead lasted 11 minutes after the restart. Sturm again found space through the centre and played in Aljosa Matko. Matko brushed aside defender Luis Binks and beat goalkeeper Angus Gunn. The move had started with a cheaply conceded Scotland throw-in.

Slovenia pushed on from there to take the win in Glasgow. It was a sharp reversal for a Scotland side that had started Pocognoli's reign with a 0-0 draw away to Slovenia on 26 September, a game in which Scotland created several chances, and had then chased back-to-back wins. Scottish FA

The fixture was part of the Nations League, UEFA's competition that replaces many friendlies with grouped, competitive matches. UEFA lists Scotland against Slovenia as a League phase game in League B, Group 1, kicking off at 19:45 BST at Hampden. UEFA

What makes this stand out is the history. Scotland beat Slovenia 1-0 on Slovenia's second visit to Hampden in a World Cup qualifier, Chris Martin scoring the only goal. Martin also struck late the last time Slovenia visited Glasgow.

For fans, this one will sting a little longer. A night built for Robertson, with his former managers beside him and Hampden loud, ended with Scotland chasing the game they had led.
