Pornhub is accessible again to Australian adults who confirm their age through Apple's device-level check.

Parent company Aylo said access would be restored for Australian users who complete Apple's verification, ending a block imposed in March 2026. Alex Kekesi, Aylo's vice-president for brand and community, said the return was possible because Apple now performs age-checking in iOS. The Guardian

Aylo blocked Australian users in March after online safety codes required adult websites to verify users are 18 or older. Sites that failed to verify age faced potential fines of $49.5 million. The restoration is limited. It applies specifically to eligible age-confirmed Australian iOS users, not to the open web in general.

Apple rolled out the checks in Australia in September 2026 after an earlier rollout in the United Kingdom in 2026. Users can confirm age with a credit card or by scanning a passport, driver's licence or government ID. Like a library card that shows you joined years ago, an existing Apple account can also serve as proof. Apple can check the credit card on file or how long the account has been held.

Aylo published the change on 6 October in an announcement titled "Aylo welcomes eligible age-confirmed Australian iOS users back to Pornhub". Aylo The company had previously announced restoration for eligible adult users in the United Kingdom who confirmed age through Apple's UK age assurance. Aylo

Shortly after the March block, three VPN apps rose sharply in app download charts. A VPN is a tool that can hide location to reach blocked sites. Australia's eSafety defines age verification as determining age to a high level of certainty, typically by checking data against an external source. Its consultation material states verification should extend to all commercial pornography sites, not just sites that allow users to generate content. Age assurance requirements under Australia's Search Engine Services Code (Age-Restricted Material) were listed as coming into effect on 27 June 2026.

The broader context here is a shift in where compliance happens. Aylo had objected to conducting its own document checks for Australian visitors. With device-level assurance, the operating system does the check and the site accepts Apple's signal rather than collecting identity documents itself. For regulators, the model reduces direct handling of sensitive IDs by content providers. For platforms, it centralizes a gatekeeping role in app stores and account systems.

Looking at enforcement, the test will be coverage and consistency. The current restoration covers only iOS users who completed Apple's process. That leaves open how other access paths are treated under the same codes, and whether regulators accept operating-system signals as sufficient across ecosystems. The VPN spike after March showed restrictions alone can redirect demand quickly. Policymakers will now watch whether frictionless, device-based checks change behavior where site-based checks did not.
