GTA 6 Seen Played for First Time in 30-Minute Rockstar Demo

Someone has finally watched Grand Theft Auto VI being played live.
IGN was invited to Rockstar North to see the game running for the first time, with Rob Nelson, Head of Development and Co-Studio Head, on the controller. The visit lasted 30 minutes and forms the basis of GTA 6: The Big Interview, published on 7 October 2026, according to IGN.
The release date is set. Grand Theft Auto VI will launch on Thursday, November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, according to Rockstar Games. Rockstar describes it as a single-player experience, and pre-orders opened on June 25.
The demo focused on how the world reacts. GTA 6 has a new-look wanted system, the measure that controls how police track and chase the player. Rockstar has described the idea with the line "you're not just wanted, you're hunted." There is also a new system for stealing cars, although the detail of how it works has not been made public.
The story follows two leads, Jason and Lucia. Their romantic relationship is entirely optional. Players can still have them share a Safehouse space, and can do activities with them on their own or together between missions and story-driven content, Nelson said.
That Safehouse works differently from past games. Nelson said the spaces are closer in feel and interactivity to the camps in Red Dead Redemption 2 than to safehouses in previous GTA games. The idea is a place that feels like home, where both characters can exist together. The Safehouse shown in the demo is not owned by Jason and Lucia. They are staying in someone else's house.
The project has been long in the making. Nelson puts development at 13 years, and has said the aim is "a step forward in all respects." He previously told The New York Times it took him about 80 hours to finish the game. Rockstar has also confirmed a very big map, without giving a size in numbers.
Music will arrive alongside the game. Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album will be released on November 19, with 34 new tracks. Its first six singles were made available on September 17, 2026.
For players, this means choice sits at the centre of the new game. Romance, company on jobs, and time spent at home are left to the player, while police behaviour and car theft have been rebuilt around them.
